Pat O'Hara first experienced the cultural and natural beauty of Georgia in the spring of 1990. During a special assignment to this Soviet Socialist Republic, his travels introduced him to a unique culture of friendly and proud people eager to communicate with him.

An estimated 3000 ancient cultural monuments embellished the territory: many churches, cathedrals, city remnants and stone dwellings. Georgia's geography was equally impressive: the temperate Kolkheti Plain to the west boarding of the Black Sea, the prodigious Caucasus Mountains rising to elevations exceeding 5,000 meters to the north, the arid Iori Plateau/Alanazani Valley in the east and the forested lesser Caucasus Mountains to the south.
