The United States and Russia have proposed the establishment of the Beringian Heritage International Park in the region encompassing the Chukotsk Peninsula of the Russian northeast and Alaska's Western Arctic National Parklands stradling the Arctic circle. Historically, this was once part of the ancient Bering Land Bridge and today the continents are separated by the Bering Strait. Three native groups, the Siberian Yupik Eskimos, Inupiat Eskimos, and Chukchi Reindeer Herders live in this region. They are descendants of the peoples who have inhabited Beringia for a millennia and many continue a traditional subsistence lifestyle. Beringia map |
